In this year’s Open House, Republic Polytechnic (RP) is celebrating its 15 years of transformative success in Problem-based Learning (PBL) through the booths set up by the seven schools.

RP strongly believes in the concept of “learning by doing” when it comes to its students learning. In this current fast-paced 21st century, it is essential that students experience a more industrialised learning to get them prepared for the future workforce.

The School of Applied Science (SAS) had showcased a wide range of displays that can give students a clearer insight of what to expect from the courses they offer. They currently have six courses being offered for students to be enrolled in.

The Diploma in Marine Science and Aquaculture (DMAC) used realistic displays such as a life coral tank, to highlight what the students are learning in relation to the coral reefs. They have also explained about the different conservation programmes students have done during their Final-Year projects.

“In RP, we don’t always rely on books or lectures to educate us on our learning prospects. It’s more about the application and understanding towards a certain problem. In my course, we are constantly reminded of how we should appreciate the marine environment through the field trips and hands-on activities,” said Sobana, a second-year Marine Science and Aquaculture student.

With an additional aspect of Skills Future added into this year’s Open House booths, RP had included a substantial amount of industry element to show students the importance of being prepared before entering the workforce.

Mr Chan Wei Loong, Full-Time Lecturer from the School of Applied Science mentioned about the significance of having to collaborate with industry partners. “This year, we are focusing on the relevance of having Skills Future as part of our student’s curriculum, through numerous hands-on activities and partnerships.”

The booths consist aspects from the closely related industry partners like their very own Prawn Breeding project that was sponsored by the Shrimp Improvement Systems (SIS). With all these fundamentals added into the students’ learning, students can pick up essential transferable skills to get them prepared for the future.

Other than its PBL, RP hopes that the incoming batch of students would discover their interests through the open house before selecting their courses.

“I want to be an RP student as the learning here is very engaging and I agree with the RP’s style of teaching,” mentioned Hazatul, Westwood secondary-five student.
